The Rules of the Mind: what Marisa Peer observed, and what the neuroscience says is happening underneath
There's a particular kind of frustration that comes with understanding your anxiety perfectly and still feeling it. You know where it started. You can name the trigger, trace the pattern, even predict what your body is about to do. And it does it anyway. The insight sits in one part of you while the reaction runs in another, and no amount of explaining seems to get the two talking.
That gap, between what you understand and what your system does, is exactly what the Rules of the Mind describe.
Marisa Peer, the therapist who developed Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT®), spent decades in clinical practice noticing that the mind operates by a consistent set of principles, whether or not we know about them. She called them the Rules of the Mind, and they explain a great deal about why anxiety, panic and old patterns behave the way they do. They also explain why so much well-intentioned effort to change fails.
What interests me, coming from a physiotherapy and health science background, is that these rules weren't derived from brain scans. They came from watching thousands of clients. And yet when you hold them up against what neuroscience has established about how the brain actually learns, protects and predicts, the two line up remarkably well. The rules are clinical observations. The mechanisms underneath them are physiology.
Here are six of them, with the science underneath each one.
Your mind always does what it thinks is in your best interest
This is the rule that reframes everything else. The reaction you can't stand in yourself, the panic, the bracing, the overthinking at 3am, was built to protect you. The mind's first job is not your happiness. It's your survival.
The physiology backs this completely. The brain's threat-detection circuitry, centred on the amygdala, is built to err on the side of caution, because in evolutionary terms a false alarm costs you a bad afternoon and a missed threat costs you everything. The system is biased toward protection by design. When your amygdala tags something as dangerous, an exam room, a raised voice, the feeling of being watched, it doesn't ask whether the tag is still accurate. It runs the protection.
So, the symptom you experience as malfunction is, from your brain's point of view, a job well done. Panic before a meeting is your system mobilising you for a threat it genuinely believes is real. That doesn't make it pleasant. It makes it purposeful, and things with a purpose can be worked with in a way that random malfunctions can't.
In a battle between emotion and logic, emotion wins
"I understand my anxiety. I just still feel it more than I want to." Almost everyone I work with says a version of this, and this rule is why.
The threat system and the reasoning system are different circuits running at different speeds. Sensory information reaches the amygdala through a fast subcortical route before the slower, more detailed processing of the cortex has finished its work, which is why your heart is already racing before you've consciously registered what startled you. The body has responded before the thinking has begun.
It gets worse under load. Research on stress and the prefrontal cortex, notably from neuroscientist Amy Arnsten's lab at Yale, shows that stress chemistry actively impairs prefrontal function, the very region you'd use to reason with yourself, while strengthening the amygdala's grip. In other words, the moment you most need logic is the moment your brain has taken it partially offline. You're not failing to think your way out of anxiety. You're trying to use a circuit the anxious state has dialled down, against a circuit it has dialled up.
Your mind responds to the pictures and words you give it
You rehearsed the argument in your head. By the end of it your jaw was tight and your heart rate was up, and the conversation hadn't happened. It may never happen. Your body responded anyway.
This is because the brain doesn't cleanly separate vividly imagined experience from real experience. Neuroimaging work on motor imagery shows that imagining a movement activates much of the same neural circuitry as performing it, which is why mental rehearsal is standard practice in elite sport and in stroke rehabilitation. The same principle runs in the other direction. Vividly imagining a threatening scenario activates the threat response as though the scenario were unfolding, complete with the stress chemistry that goes with it.
Every catastrophic mental movie you run is, to your nervous system, a lived event. A mind that rehearses disaster daily is training for disaster daily. This is also, importantly, the mechanism hypnotherapy borrows deliberately: if imagined experience shapes the system, then imagined experience chosen with intention can shape it in the direction you want.
The mind doesn't respond to negatives
Try not to think about your heart beating. Or a pink elephant.
Notice what just happened? To process the instruction, your brain had to represent the very thing you were told to avoid. Psychologist Daniel Wegner spent years studying this under the name ironic process theory, showing that deliberately suppressing a thought requires the mind to monitor for that thought, which keeps it active, and under stress or mental load the suppressed thought tends to rebound harder than before.
This is why "calm down," "stop worrying" and "don't panic" are close to useless as self-instruction. Each one hands the brain an image of the thing you're trying to leave. Trying not to overthink hasn't worked for you because it can't. The instruction itself keeps the pattern lit up. The alternative isn't willpower, it's redirection: giving the mind something to move toward rather than something to move away from, which is precisely why well-constructed hypnotherapy language is framed in the affirmative.
The mind learns by repetition
Every thought you repeat, every reaction you rehearse, every belief you revisit gets easier for your brain to produce. Neuroscience has known the basic mechanism since Donald Hebb: neurons that fire together strengthen their connections, a process the field calls long-term potentiation. Pathways that get used become faster and more automatic. Over time, heavily used circuits are physically reinforced, so that what was once a response becomes a reflex.
This cuts both ways, and both directions matter. Years of repeating "I can't cope with this" builds a superhighway to that conclusion, which is why the thought arrives so fast it feels like fact rather than habit. But the same plasticity that installed the pattern is the plasticity that can install a new one. This is why an RTT session ends with a personalised recording listened to daily, and why nervous system regulation is a practice rather than a technique you deploy once. Repetition wired it in. Repetition, with the right content, wires in something else.
The mind returns to what is familiar
You finally got a quiet week and felt strangely on edge. The holiday arrived and you got sick, or picked a fight, or lay awake. This is the rule people find most confronting, because it means the mind doesn't gravitate toward what's good for you. It gravitates toward what it knows.
Modern neuroscience increasingly describes the brain as a prediction machine: it runs a constant model of what's about to happen and works to keep experience matching the model, because a predictable world is a survivable world. If your system spent years calibrated to pressure, vigilance and holding everything together, then that state is the model. Calm isn't read as safe. Calm is read as unfamiliar, and unfamiliar is exactly what a prediction-driven brain is built to flag.
So the pull back toward the old pattern after a good stretch isn't self-sabotage in any meaningful sense. It's a brain doing what brains do, returning to baseline. The work isn't to fight that pull. It's to change what baseline is, so that the familiar state your system defends is a regulated one.
Why knowing the rules isn't enough
Here is the honest part. You can read all of this, understand it completely, and change very little. That's not a flaw in you and it's not a flaw in the information. It's the rules applying to themselves. Insight lives in the conscious, cortical, logical layer. The patterns live in the fast, emotional, repetition-built, familiarity-seeking layer underneath. The subconscious. Rule five already told you which one wins.
Changing the layer underneath needs the subconsicous’ own language, and its language is experience, emotion, imagery and repetition, not explanation. This is what RTT is built to do: reach the state where the subconscious material is accessible, find the belief the pattern is protecting, and update it using the same mechanisms that installed it. And it's why I pair that work with nervous system regulation, because a belief change lands best in a body that's building the capacity to feel safe. One layer without the other has a ceiling. Together, the rules start working for you instead of against you.

Are the Rules of the Mind scientifically proven?
They're best understood as clinical observations, drawn from decades of Marisa Peer's therapeutic practice, that map closely onto established neuroscience. The rules themselves haven't been tested as a set, but the mechanisms underneath them, threat bias, emotional processing outpacing reasoning, mental imagery activating real physiology, thought suppression rebound, repetition-based plasticity, and the brain's drive toward the predictable, are each well documented in their own fields.
Why do I understand my anxiety but still feel it?
Because understanding and reacting run on different circuits. Insight is a slow, cortical process. The threat response is a fast, subcortical one that fires first and is strengthened, not weakened, by stress. Understanding is genuinely valuable, it just isn't the tool that changes the reaction. The reaction changes through the mechanisms it was built with: felt safety, emotion, imagery and repetition.
What is the subconscious mind in brain terms?
There's no single structure labelled "subconscious," but the concept corresponds to something real: the vast majority of brain processing happens outside conscious awareness, including threat detection, emotional learning, habit circuits and the predictive models that shape what you feel before you've thought anything at all. When hypnotherapy talks about working with the subconscious, in practical terms it means working with these automatic layers rather than with deliberate reasoning.
Can the subconscious actually be rewired?
Neuroplasticity, the brain's capacity to reorganise its connections through experience, continues throughout adult life. The same repetition and emotional salience that installed a pattern can install a different one. What matters is reaching the right layer with the right ingredients, which is why approaches that combine focused states, emotionally engaged imagery and daily repetition tend to reach patterns that explanation alone doesn't.
